Nickel City Opera presents ‘The Falling and the Rising’ by the U.S. Army at
Nichols Flickinger Performing Arts Center, Buffalo, NY June 29th & 30th
‘15th Annual NCO Gala Dinner’ at Ilio DiPaolo’s June 25th
Buffalo, NY - Nickel City Opera is proud to present Season 15 with a new American opera, The Falling and the Rising produced by the U.S. Army Field Band, Saturday, June 29th, 8:00pm and Sunday, June 30th, 4:00pm at Nichols Flickinger Performing Arts Center, 1250 Amherst Street, Buffalo, NY. The 15th Annual NCO Gala Dinner rounds out the Season, Monday, June 24th, 6:00pm at Ilio DiPaolo’s, 3785 South Park Avenue, Blasdell, NY.
The Falling and the Rising with music by Zach Redler and libretto by Jerre Dye, is based upon a series of interviews with wounded warriors, active duty service members and veterans seeking to share the camaraderie and values of Soldiers serving in America’s Army. The production will be presented FREE and open to all with reserved tickets.
The mission of the U.S. Army Field Band is to serve and inspire the American people by telling the Army story and honoring our Soldiers and Veterans at home and abroad. In 2015, Master Sergeant Benjamin Hilgert of the Soldiers’ Chorus conceived of a way to carry out that mission more effectively than ever: an opera based on the true stories of active duty Soldiers.
The Falling and the Rising is a powerful story based on interviews with real service members and Veterans. It follows the journey of a Soldier, posted in a conflict overseas, whose world is forever changed by an improvised explosive device. Her path home is one of struggle, resilience, community and resounding strength. The Falling and the Rising resonates through stunning music and the authentic portrayal of heroes who serve, whose real experiences are artfully woven into this remarkable new American opera.
This operatic soldier’s odyssey was created in hopes of capturing the indomitable spirit of our U.S. military veterans and to shed light on the inspirational power of their often overlooked stories. The Falling and the Rising is a story of family, service and sacrifice inside a period of great uncertainty. The intimate, fully-staged, 90-minute chamber opera is performed by five principal singers and chorus, all members of the U.S. Army Field Band Soldiers’ Chorus and a 10-piece orchestra provided by Buffalo Musicians’ Association Local 92.
The Falling and the Rising was conceived by Master Sergeant Benjamin Hilgert. Originally commissioned by the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus, Opera Memphis, Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Arizona Opera and TCU. Originally workshopped at Seagle Music Colony. Special thanks go to Garnett Brooks for producing the North Carolina premiere at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater in January, 2018.

For the first time in many years, Valerian will perform classics including music by Victor Herbert, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Verdi, Puccini and Brahms. Accompanied on piano by Elizabeth Rodgers. “My international career is filled with opera roles but being able to sing non-opera music like songs by Schubert or Brahms is not so common. I have enjoyed much of this recital music for many years and after the last year it felt refreshing to re-approach this music and prepare it for a local audience. These are settings of poems and lyrics that I am highly inspired by so I hope that everyone comes and can enjoy them with me.”

Nickel City Opera’s ‘Rigoletto’ LIVE by Giuseppe Verdi
Available April 10th on Spotify and All Streaming Platforms
Los Angeles, CA-Nickel City Opera is proud to release the audio soundtrack of the Buffalo, NY production of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ recorded live at the historic Riviera Theatre available April 10th, 2020 on all streaming platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music and Pandora
“We’re proud to be able to share this special production and thrilled to be able to bring this recording to opera fans worldwide on their favorite streaming platforms. The quality level is on par with other available productions and a true testament to the goals of NCO to create productions that are of the highest standards.”..Valerian Ruminski, Artistic Director.
Rigoletto stars John Packard in the lead role, Heather Buck as Gilda, Eric Fennell as The Duke, Valerian Ruminski as Monterone and Sparafucile, Quinn Patrick as Maddelena, Edward Albert as Marullo, Rose Serrano as Giovanna,Tom Witakowski as Count Ceprano, Nadia Petrella as Countess Ceprano, Brett Potts as Borsa, Gary Sage as the Messenger and Danielle DiStefano as the Page. Conducted by Zachary Kampler with the Eastern Festival Symphony Orchestra. Directed by David MacAdam. Produced by Valerian Ruminski and Eileen Breen.
Rave reviews from The Buffalo News:
“John Packard sang his heart out as Rigoletto, his flexible, strong baritone brought out the beauty of Verdi's writing. Heather Buck, as Rigoletto's daughter Gilda, dazzled the audience with her bell-like high notes. Strong-voiced tenor Eric Fennell made a terrific, rakish Duke of Mantua..filled out what could have been a cardboard part with humanity and lent even the chilling ‘La donna e mobile’ a certain allure. You could see why Gilda could not resist him, and you sensed that the womanizing Duke could have reformed. NCO director Valerian Ruminski as the assassin Sparafucile looks as if he walked in off the set of ‘Boris Godunov’, with long, lank black hair and an indifferent, oafish expression. He takes chances. You have to love him.”..The Buffalo News
